Travelling to Japan can be a bit daunting for first timers. We would however wish to dispel a few myths and say that Japan is really one of the easiest and most enjoyable countries to travel around. English sign posting is widespread and if you really are lost or in need of some assistance then most Japanese do speak a basic level of English and are always on hand and only too happy to help.

■ Narita Airport to The Pheonix Wing via train

Exiting immigration and into the arrival lounge look for the JR Ticket office (Level B1). Purchase a reserved (guaranteed seating) or non-reserved ticket (not guaranteed seating) on the Narita Experss (NEX) to Tokyo Train Station (53 mins). It’s advisable to purchase your Shinkansen tickets here at the airport also as staff are fluent English speakers and all credit cards are accepted.

First stop on the NEX is Tokyo Train Station. Alight from your train, head through the ticket gates and exit the platform. Look out for the overhead sign posting of the Shinkansen lines. Make your way for the Tokyo-Nagano Shinkansen line and board your train. Nagano is the last stop on the line so there’s no fear of missing your stop. The train journey takes approx. 90mins.

If you have made arrangements with The Phoenix Wing for our complimentary Nagano-Hakuba transfer then, upon your arrival at Nagano, head out through the ticket gates and make a right. Head to end of the station, go down the escalator and into the car parking area where one of our staff will be greeting your arrival. If you are doing the Nagano to Hakuba transfer yourself then, upon exiting the ticket gates take a left. Make your way to end of the station and turn left and go down the escalator/stairs. On your left there’s a newsagents/shop. Go inside and from the counter purchase a Hakuba bus ticket 1400 one way. It’s a 1 hour bus ride to the Hakuba Station Bus Stop. Arriving at Hakuba Station exit the bus and, if you haven’t already notified us of your arrival time, use one of the pay phones in the stations parking area to call the hotel and we will have one of our staff members pick you up within 5-10 minutes. To avoid getting a chill while you’re waiting why not enjoy a nice warm coffee from Bamboo café- adjacent to phone booths.

■Shinjuku to Hakuba via train

A slightly more time consuming (3.5 hours) but very much more scenic way to arrive to Hakuba is via the JR Chu-O-Honsen Limited Express Super Azusa from Shinjuku. Perfect if you plan on staying a night or two in Tokyo on route to The Phoenix Wing, Shinjuku Station’s Hakuba bound train winds its way through the heart of the Japanese Alps.

Arriving at Hakuba Station exit the station into the adjoining car parking area and, if you haven’t already notified us of your arrival time, use one of the pay phones in the stations parking area to call the hotel and we will have one of our staff members pick you up within 5-10 minutes. To avoid getting a chill while you’re waiting why not enjoy a nice warm coffee from Bamboo café- adjacent to phone booths.
